May 16, 2012

Living legend Maya Angelou shared the power of exercising an “attitude of gratitude” at her recent lecture at the Hanover Theatre in Worcester, MA on May 9, 2012. She moved the audience by sharing her trials, tribulations and triumphs. The audience, largely comprised of women from every race, color, class and creed, gathered together to appreciate her life’s work.
Many women can relate to and draw common threads from her literary gems, especially this notable piece: I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams.
His shadow shouts on a nightmare scream.
His wings are clipped 1and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.
