June 24, 2010

By Janette Boulay THE SUN CHRONICLE STAFF

NORTON - A local resident, Maggie Wakim of Norton, will be among the contestants to compete in the Miss Massachusetts Scholarship Pageant this weekend in Worcester.

Wakim, 22, the daughter of Dr. Anthony and Anita Wakim, is Miss Norfolk County and a 2010 Regis College graduate, who majored in biology. As part of the competition, she will present a talk on "Curing Autism," and will offer a vocal presentation

For the second consecutive year, the pageant will be held in the newly restored Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts in Worcester, starting at 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.

Also competing from the area will be Amanda Marie Narciso of Taunton, Miss Eastern Massachusetts 2010. At 19, Narciso, the daughter of Isabel and the late Jose M. Narciso, is a junior at Salve Regina University in Newport, R.I., majoring in psychology and also studying dance. She will be performing a tap dance and speaking about the Andrea Rizzo Foundation.

Now in its 71st year, the Miss Massachusetts Scholarship Pageant, is a preliminary to the Miss America Program. The two-night pageant will feature Miss Massachusetts 2009 Amanda Kelly of Braintree and 22 contestants who will compete for scholarship money and the opportunity to represent Massachusetts at the 90th Anniversary Miss America Pageant in January.

A new feature will be online voting to select the 11th finalist for Saturday's show. For $1 per vote, fans can visit the Miss Massachusetts website and cast their vote for the contestant of their choice whom they would like to see as the 11th finalist. Online voting is now taking place. For more details, visit www.missmass.org and click on the Online Voting link.

Tickets for the pageant are available for the preliminary show on Friday and for the final competition on Saturday and can be purchased at www.thehanovertheatre.org or by calling the box office at 508-831-0800 or 877-571-SHOW (7469).
