WORCESTER — The Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts was packed yesterday for Anna Maria College's 61st commencement ceremony.

Student speaker Ashley M. Capdeville from Peabody, who received her bachelor's degree in psychology, reminded her fellow students what they had been through together in their years attending the college — enduring a war that never seems to end, she said, an economy that seems to just get worse, and acts of violence and crime. Bur she also pointed to positive events, including the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics winning championships, becoming Facebook addicts and experiencing history together when the first African-American president was elected to office.

But Ms. Capdeville had a distressing experience much closer to home occur during her sophomore year at Anna Maria when her father died suddenly. She said that left her depressed, struggling with academics and made her lose hope. The support of her family and friends, and something her mother said to her, got her through to graduation.

“She said, ‘God never gives us more than we can bear,' ” Ms. Capdeville said. “I truly believe that.”

Anna Maria College President Jack P. Calareso said colleges all over the country were holding similar ceremonies and graduates' thoughts were the same as theirs. What makes Anna Maria unique, he said, are its values, history, tradition and community.

Mr. Calareso said he was confident their liberal arts education from Anna Maria College will serve them well and they would contribute to the world, the common good and to the quality of life of the people they meet.

As Larry Lucchino, president and CEO of the Boston Red Sox took the lectern to speak, “Go Sox!” was yelled from the audience.

Mr. Lucchino shared words of wisdom from the former Major League Baseball player and manager Yogi Berra, including, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” Then he gave graduates his top 10 tips for living a happy, productive, balanced life.

Mr. Lucchino, a two-time cancer survivor, said being a loving person was wonderful, but being a generous person was the best of all. He told them if they wanted happiness for a lifetime, to find a way to help others.
