‘Madama Butterfly’ to be performed at Hanover

April 27, 2010

By TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF

Giacomo Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” is not ephemeral in terms of its enduring ability to mesmerize. The story of a handsome officer abroad in a distant country and the lovely woman he meets there plays out as full tragedy to achingly beautiful music.

The National Lyric Opera will bring a fully staged performance of the opera to The Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The production is presented by Opera Worcester Inc. The National Lyric Opera is a touring offshoot of Dicapo Opera Theatre in New York which just staged “Madama Butterfly,” and many of the performers from that production will be coming to Worcester.

Michael Capasso, who heads both the National Lyric Opera and Dicapo Opera and directs “Madama Butterfly,” has more than a passing familiarity with Puccini. Last season, Dicapo Opera completed a multi-year presentation of every piece of music Puccini ever wrote.

Tickets for “Madama Butterfly” are $45-$55. Call (877) 571-7469 or visit www.thehanover theatre.org.
