Ashley Beck takes another step toward Broadway

February 17, 2010

By Eileen Kennedy, TIMES & COURIER STAFF

Her video audition was chosen over 29 other eager performers from the area to sing in the national, traveling production of Neil Berg’s 100 Years of Broadway, which was performed at the Hanover Theatre in Worcester on Sunday, Feb. 14. Seven other runners up performed along with well-known Broadway actors.

“Ashley’s audition stood out because, in addition to being a great singer, she was able to communicate. To put it simply, she tells the story of her songs, and that’s what acting is all about,” said Brett Nichols, the show’s production manager.

Her background

Ashley, 21, graduated from Clinton High School, where she performed in Hello Dolly! and South Pacific during those four years. She started voice lessons in third grade, and was in the chorus in middle and high schools. She has attended the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford in Hartford, Conn., although she has taken a temporary leave for a year while she works on her dream of reaching Broadway. Ashley also had a solo show last fall at Clinton Town Hall called, “On My Way to Broadway.”

Future plans

While she wants to be on Broadway, she is also working on plan B – elementary education, which she is pursuing at Worcester State College. Ashley intends to become a music teacher because she loves teaching and children. In the meantime she is focusing quite a bit of time and effort to getting on Broadway, along with her parents, William and Donna Beck. She also submitted an audition to the television show, “Glee.” “My dad is always looking for shows for me, he’s so funny,” she said. Many stage and television shows request electronic submissions.

In her own words

“It’s always been my dream to sing, and even to be on the Hanover Theatre stage is amazing. Bernadette Peters was on that stage.” (Peters opened the theater after renovations.)

“I wouldn’t be anywhere without my parents, they’ve been by my side through everything. When I told them that I was going to sing at the Hanover, they said they couldn’t get a better Valentine.”

“You have to get right back up to where you were. As much it stinks when you don’t succeed, you have to keep trying. You can’t give up.”
