Decade in Review: 2008

December 27, 2009

March
The Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts opens in downtown Worcester after eight years of fundraising, development and renovation. It just goes to show that if you love the arts and enjoy twisting arms and working hard for eight years, eight very long years, anything is possible in Worcester!

July
Police seize lobsters from a truck and restaurant in Auburn one day after a Webster health official ordered them destroyed because the hauler carrying them was in a traffic accident on Interstate 395, all of which confirms that one man’s diesel-tainted crustacean is another man’s delicacy.

August
Asian longhorned beetles are discovered in Worcester. The Arboreal Assault begins.

November
Barack Obama, former Illinois state legislator who spoke at Democratic National Convention in Boston four years earlier, is elected president.

December
Ice storm whacks the region, leaving some people in northern Worcester County without power for two weeks. Utility companies learn important lesson: Do not tell customers you expect to restore their power soon unless you absolutely, positively know you can.
