The Hanover Theatre is announcing the launch of ‘Restaurant of the Month,’ a new feature in which we will be reviewing some of the best local restaurants. This month, Flying Rhino Café and Watering Hole takes the spotlight as one of Worcester’s most unique restaurants, specializing in eclectic dishes that feature flavors from around the world.
Since Flying Rhino’s opening in 2000, co-owners Paul and Melina Barber have explored their passion for serving quality, original food in a fun, casual atmosphere. As both Paul and Melina enjoy sampling smaller dishes, the couple originally wanted to open a tapas restaurant. As the Flying Rhino evolved into being, the Barbers found a way to offer both tapas-portioned plates and entrées, all with the originality and diverse ethnic influences that they originally intended.
The Flying Rhino menu evolves and unfolds as a result of the owners’ and staff’s shifting epicurean moods. The Barbers do not want their restaurant to be confined to one style of cuisine; they showcase the best of global flavors alongside classic American dishes, giving their customers the opportunity to try several cuisines under one roof. Currently, one can find Greek, Mexican, Middle Eastern, Italian, Japanese, Cuban, and American food on the menu, all beautifully executed and their ingredients carefully chosen to highlight unique flavors.
From “Wild Bite Rainforest” vegetarian appetizers, to “Entrée Safari” meat dishes, inventive sandwiches, and “Coastal” seafood, the menu plays off the jungle theme while catering to a variety of tastes. Some of the more intriguing menu items include Coconut Lime Salmon, Rum Crème Ravioli, The Ivory Tusk (an incredibly popular chicken cheese steak sandwich), Citrus Tea Duck, and Tequila Shrimp. Sharing and sampling is encouraged, as appetizers are available in Bite, Doublebite, and Superbite sizes.
The restaurant itself is just as colorful as the menu, thanks to the artistic vision and talents of Melina Barber, who paints the tables and tablecloths so that each table is a vivid work of art. A bucket of silverware sits in the middle of the table, serving as an artistic centerpiece, while emphasizing the shared experience of dining together. Comfortable and familiar, yet enticingly exotic, Flying Rhino invites customers to embrace adventure in a casual setting.
